Pregnant Sheriff Joanna Brady could deliver at any moment, but there are two serious crimes open for investigation. First, an unidentified dead man is found in the desert, with all ten fingers chopped off. The victim turns out to be an ex-con who served 20 years for the murder of his pregnant wife, though he claimed to be innocent. Then one of Joanna's officers is brutally attacked and left for dead, becoming the department's top priority. But Joanna can't let the murder case go and dives into it on her own, embarking on a dangerous quest for the truth.
You can't go wrong with this latest addition to the Sheriff Joanna Brady series. Narrator Susan Ericksen's delivery is smooth as silk. Ericksen maneuvers adeptly from character to character, catching the essence of each regardless of gender. This time Brady has her hands full. She's about to deliver her second child when she's called upon to investigate the death of an ex-con whose fingerless body was discovered in the desert. At the same time, one of her female officers is brutally beaten. Brady relentlessly connects the dots that link the crime to one investigated by her late father. Ericksen's performance adds a personable dimension to Brady's character. A.L.H. (c) AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine
